Tongue scraping is a relatively new phenomenon in dentistry. It's simply defined as the process of removing debris from the surface of the tongue with some form of a scraper designed for the purpose. Through the course of the day, debris gets trapped between the taste buds on your tongue. Recent studies have shown a correlation between tongue scraping and a reduction in  halitosis (bad breath), gum disease, and tooth decay.

How Does It Work?

There are literally dozens of different types of tongue scrapers. Ideally, they should be used just prior to brushing. Most tongue scrapers are made of soft, flexible plastic which can be bent and pulled gently over the tongue. Usually, after only a few strokes, no more debris can be removed. Initially, the site of what's coming off your tongue can be a little unsettling, but it's better than the thought of leaving it on.

Regular tongue scraping usually has a large effect on improving cases of halitosis and bad breath associated with smoking.

 Can't I Just Use My Toothbrush?

Using your toothbrush to clean your tongue is better than not cleaning your tongue at all, however, it's ineffective. Toothbrushes just aren't designed to clean the tongue.
